They say there are three people in this world—or, at least in Detroit, MI, anyway…
Those who are happy with the way their nose looks but wish they could breathe better, those who are happy with how their nose functions but wish it looked better, and those who don’t like their nose at all.
Of course, then there are those who love everything about their nose.
But you’re probably asking yourself: “Do those people even exist?”
Well, believe it or not, they do—and many of them were once in your shoes.
While, yes, some people are born with a “perfect nose,” the strong majority of us will have at least one thing we’d like to change about its appearance or function, if not both—and that’s completely okay!
In fact, it’s 100% normal and there’s a lot The Rontal Clinic can do to help!
The three people we described above might have different goals and wants when it comes to their nose, but they all share one thing in common—and it’s that they can all be treated with the same procedure.
That procedure is called a rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a “nose job,” is a type of surgical procedure that alters the shape, size, or proportions of the nose. The three most common reasons why someone undergoes a rhinoplasty are to:
More than 47,000 people in the United States underwent rhinoplasty in 2023, making it the third most common facial plastic surgery last year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Yet, so many people still have the wrong idea when they hear the term “nose job.”
Here at The Rontal Clinic, we’re committed to defeating that old stigma around rhinoplasties. That’s why we’re going to give you a step-by-step look at the procedure—to ensure you know exactly what to expect.
Before we can talk about surgery, we need to take a look at your nose and discuss your goals.
During your pre-operative meeting, your doctor will perform a physical exam of the nose and ask you a series of questions to get a better sense of your medical history—including what medications you take.
Then they’ll ask you to describe what your idea of a “perfect nose” would be.
This is your opportunity to discuss any issues you have with your current nose and mention any changes you were hoping to make to the way it looks or functions. It’s okay to be honest—this is a judge-free zone.
Your doctor will then give you a realistic rundown of what’s possible.
Here at The Rontal Clinic, we believe the best result is a nose that has been made into a patient's own ideal, which means avoiding the typical, telltale “operated” look and opting for a more natural result.
Walking into your ENT doctor’s office on surgery day can be overwhelming for a lot of patients.
While it’s common to experience a rush of mixed emotions leading up to the big day, it’s important to know that your entire care team will be with you every step of the way—and that’s our guarantee to you.
A few things to note about rhinoplasty surgery:
There are two primary approaches to rhinoplasty: the closed and open approach. The open approach is generally reserved for major reconstructions, while the closed approach is best for minor nose reshaping.
The approach will be discussed and determined ahead of time to ensure transparency throughout.
Most rhinoplasties are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients get to return home when it’s all said and done—but make sure you have a ride home because you won’t be allowed to drive right away.
Expect the nose to be covered in splints, gauges, bandages, and stitches for at least one week post-op.
Pain and swelling will be at its worst in the first week post-surgery, and most patients will experience minor bruising and tenderness on the cheeks and under the eyes, but this will gradually heal over time.
With that said, most people can expect to return to their daily routine within the one-month mark.
While you’ll start to notice results after that first month, it could take up to a year for your final nose shape to take form. Expect to see your doctor several times over that year to ensure progress is maintained.
Are you unhappy with how your nose looks? Do you have a hard time breathing out of your nasal airways properly? Do you often feel self-conscious about your nose? Do you want a nose you can be proud of?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of those questions, then don’t panic—you’ve come to the right place!
Welcome to The Rontal Clinic—where the Detroit, MI community can learn to love their nose again.
Our team of ENT specialists are seasoned vets when it comes to performing rhinoplasties. Together, we’ll take the time to understand your desired outcome while achieving a result that doesn’t appear operated.
